Description
Sweet apricot oil (also called apricot kernel oil) is a light, non-greasy carrier oil pressed from the kernels (the seed inside the pit) of apricots, specifically the “sweet” variety of kernel as opposed to bitter apricot kernels (which contain higher amygdalin/cyanogenic compounds and are used differently, often in food flavoring in small amounts or for extracting laetrile, somewhat controversially).
A few key things about it:
Extraction: “Cold-pressed” means the oil is mechanically extracted from the kernels without heat or chemical solvents, which helps preserve more of the natural vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants compared to heat- or solvent-extracted oils.
Composition: It’s rich in oleic acid (a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (omega-6), plus vitamin E and some vitamin A. This fatty acid profile is similar to almond oil, which is why apricot oil is often compared to or used as a substitute for sweet almond oil.
Common uses:
- Skincare — moisturizer, massage oil, makeup remover; valued for being light, fast-absorbing, and suitable for sensitive or mature skin
- Hair care — scalp/hair oil for shine and softness
- Cosmetic formulations — carrier oil for diluting essential oils
- Occasionally in cooking, though it’s much more common as a cosmetic oil than a culinary one (unlike olive or sunflower oil)
Scent/texture: Typically has a mild, slightly nutty smell and a light texture, less heavy than oils like olive or coconut oil.
